ZÖLLNER, a leading provider of rail solutions, has announced its commitment to support research projects focused on intelligent rail technology, as part of the REAKT initiative in Schleswig-Holstein.
The initiative aims to promote the reactivation of existing but currently retired rail infrastructure by fostering collaborations between industry and higher education institutions. One of the key challenges in operating these rail lines, especially in rural areas, is economic viability. Autonomous rail traffic and intelligent rail technology could provide significant cost reductions in this regard.

To address this challenge, ZÖLLNER is partnering with the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel on a research project titled Intelligent Rail Technology Using Technology for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. The company will contribute its industry expertise by supplying basic train recognition technology and supporting data collection in real-life conditions. The long-term goal of the project is to develop technology capable of reliably recognizing incoming trains even in poor visibility conditions, thereby ensuring the safe operation of rail crossing systems, switches, and train signals.
