This is what Czech highways could look like. Polish construction giant Budimex is wrapping up a major highway project near the Tricity area. Here’s a look at a project that could inspire Czech highways. Budimex aims to replicate the quality of this section on the Czech D35 highway.
Polish construction company Budimex recently completed a key phase of the Tri-City bypass in northern Poland, which connects the cities of Gdańsk, Gdynia, and Sopot. This crucial infrastructure investment has had a major impact on the region, where traffic congestion is especially high during the tourist season. This densely populated area is now becoming a main transportation artery for northern Poland, linking to vital port terminals on the Baltic (DCT) and the international airport in Gdańsk.

The first phase of construction, led by Budimex, involved building a 16.3-kilometer expressway linking the Chwaszczyno and Żukowo interchanges. This highway has two lanes in each direction, with space reserved for a future third lane, allowing easy expansion. The project includes the main transport artery and 15.5 kilometers of access and service roads, greatly improving accessibility and connectivity throughout the region.
The Importance of the Tricity Project: Designed and Built by Budimex
The importance of this infrastructure investment extends beyond Tri-City. The bypass project is crucial both for residents and the many tourists who frequent the area. Tourists heading to coastal areas will appreciate faster, smoother travel, reducing the load on city centers. According to a Budimex press release, this project was implemented under a Design & Build contract and includes 28 engineering structures such as bridges and overpasses, along with noise reduction measures to improve the comfort of nearby residents.
Earthworks are now in the final phase, including the preparation of asphalt layers for the main road structure and drainage. Completion is planned for April 2025, and with the project already 80% finished, Budimex remains on track to meet this deadline thanks to an efficiently organized schedule. As one of Poland’s largest construction companies, Budimex is responsible for one in every four kilometers of expressway in Poland. Now, it has a chance to showcase this on the D35 highway section in the Czech Republic.
Tricity as a Reference for Czech Highways? Budimex Builds the D35 Section in the Czech Republic
Budimex isn’t focused solely on the domestic market; it’s actively expanding its activities in the Czech Republic, where it’s already involved in several key infrastructure projects. In March 2024, Budimex signed its first highway contract in the Czech Republic for the 7.6-kilometer section of the D35 highway construction between Džbánov and Litomyšl. This section is expected to significantly improve traffic flow between Hradec Králové and Olomouc and enhance regional connectivity in eastern Bohemia.

The project involves constructing nine bridge structures totaling more than 1,137 meters in length, including two viaducts. Another key part of the project is adjusting local roads to reduce potential traffic conflicts and ensure smooth transportation. Completion is planned for 2027, with Budimex committed to meeting the schedule.
Not Just Highways – Budimex is Also Building Water Management Structures in the Czech Republic
Another major project Budimex is undertaking in the Czech Republic is the construction of a flood control reservoir in Kutřín in the Chrudim region to enhance flood protection for nearby communities. This project includes a 146-meter-long dam with a maximum height of 17.8 meters, along with the revitalization of the Martinický Stream bed over two kilometers. Budimex won this contract with a total investment of EUR 22.3 million, with construction planned to take nearly three years. This investment aims to ensure ecological stability and regional safety.
Highways and Railways: Polish Giant Budimex Expands into the Czech Republic
Budimex plans to further expand its presence in the Czech market, showing interest in projects that could include building high-speed rail lines or upgrading the current railway infrastructure. This shift toward railway modernization aligns with the Czech Republic’s goals to increase rail capacity, speed, and service quality. Budimex plans to leverage its experience from similar projects in Poland for work in the Czech Republic. Budimex’s expansion into the Czech market is part of a broader strategy to grow its presence in international markets, including Germany, Slovakia, and Latvia.
