Budimex SA, one of Poland’s leading infrastructure construction firms working on the construction of the Czech High-Speed Rail (HSR), has successfully completed a significant rail modernization project aimed at improving access to the Port of Gdynia.
The EUR 441 million investment, co-financed by the EU’s CEF (Connecting Europe Facility), focused on enhancing railway connections to one of Poland's key seaports. This development is expected to boost logistics and transport capacity at the port, benefiting both regional and national transportation networks.
The project involved the comprehensive reconstruction of the Gdynia Port railway station, its pre-port areas, and the surrounding infrastructure. Upgrades included the modernization of 115 kilometers of track, installation of 359 turnouts, and electrification of rail access points. According to Piotr Czupryn, Budimex SA's Contract Director, "A beautiful layout of as many as 39 tracks has been created. This is undoubtedly the largest railway infrastructure contract ever carried out by Budimex." The improvements will allow longer, 750-meter trains to reach the port, significantly increasing capacity and efficiency.

In addition to rail upgrades, the project included the construction of 13 kilometers of roads, two new railway viaducts, a Local Control Centre, and new offices for PKP Cargo. These enhancements have shortened cargo handling times and increased the number of trains serviced. Dariusz Taraszkiewicz, Director of Area 1 of Railway Construction at Budimex, noted, "By modernizing the railway junction, we have increased the capacity of trains by almost five times. This opens up new opportunities for investors and transport companies."
Budimex’s work at Gdynia Port is part of a larger effort to strengthen Poland’s transport infrastructure. The company is also set to lead the construction of protective breakwaters for the Outer Port, enabling the port to handle larger vessels.
