The Institute of Heat Engineering at the Warsaw University of Technology has officially reopened following an extensive renovation and expansion led by Budimex S.A.
The historic building underwent modernization to preserve its historic elements while adding modern features to enhance its functionality. The project, which began in 2020, has been widely recognized, earning awards in the prestigious Construction of the Year competition organized by the Polish Association of Construction Engineers and Technicians.
"We are proud that we were able to modernize the historic building of the Institute of Thermal Technology and improve its daily use by students," said Artur Popko, CEO of Budimex. Despite the challenges posed by conservation requirements, Budimex successfully integrated historic elements with the new construction. The modernization, completed over 39 months, included the restoration of original features such as the façade, boiler room, and historic equipment, and updates to the building's interior to create new teaching and laboratory spaces.
The project involved a full reconstruction of three wings of the building (B, C, and D) and updates to critical infrastructure such as mechanical ventilation, air conditioning, and fire protection systems. With a contract value of over EUR 22.7 million, the building now offers students and staff improved facilities while maintaining its historical significance as a key part of the university's legacy.
