Hungary welcomed the first E-hybrid shunting locomotive developed by CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co. Ltd. for Rail Cargo Hungaria (hereinafter RCH). The locomotive is optimized for the specifications and logistics tasks performed by RCH. It will set off in the second half of 2022 and operate mainly on shunting stations and industrial sidings.

The locomotive weighs 74 tons and has hybrid electric-electric technology and a lithium-titanium battery for shunting operations which is unique in the automotive market. The vehicle's pulling power is 350 kW when using a battery and 850 kW in airline mode (on these lines, the locomotives' efficiency is increased by high-capacity energy storage technology). Without the airline, the E-hybrid locomotive can tow a train weighing 800 tons for 85 minutes at 20 km/h with the marshalling work being done at the same pace.
The RCH electric-hybrid locomotive will be tested over the next few months to obtain a license for use in Hungary.

Currently, Hungary has no overhead line over the industrial sidings and loading tracks, so railroad companies use costly, environmentally polluting diesel vehicles for shunting operations.
RCH ordered the development and production of the E-hybrid locomotive back in 2019 because the services of the company's MÁV-START diesel locomotives were declining, and the company needed to strengthen its shunting capacity. After completing the authorization process, RCH will lease the completed machine on favourable financial terms, including maintenance.
