The secondary safety navigation unit project, called NavCom, uses data from Europe's Galileo and EGNOS satellites and other techniques that are accurate to within tens of centimetres. It would reduce incidents of 'unauthorised running', which occurs when two trains collide with each other on the same track.
Commenting on the collaboration with Betrian, EUSPA's Market Development Officer Daniel Lopour said: "We are delighted that in the coming months, the Czech Republic will also be developing and testing a solution with the support of the EU space programme that can help further improve rail safety thanks to the European Galileo and EGNOS satellites, and that our carriers will also be able to test their usefulness."

In addition, these units can be fully implemented in the driver navigation system, or NavTrain, which is used by all freight trains at ČD.
The Czech Republic, in cooperation with Czech freight carrier ČD Cargo and the Czech Train Drivers' Federation, has developed NavTrain, which simplifies the provision of information to the driver during the journey. NavTrain is used in normal operation by 1,700 ČD Cargo drivers. "Drivers feel more confident with NavTrain on the line. If they overlook something important, NavTrain will alert them," commented Tomáš Tóth, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ČD Cargo.
