The Semmering Base Tunnel project and its development have reached the next milestone when the machinery reached the target limit of the construction period. More than 80% of the tunnel got successfully excavated. Another significant milestone got reached. The first tunnel excavation machine completed its scheduled work in the Fröschnitzgraben Ost construction section. A tremendous triumph for up to 400 employees involved in the tunneling of this area alone. The monster-sized machine 'Ghega' has covered more than 8,100 meters. Almost 500 meters still must get excavated in the second part of the tunnel. This work can get completed during the first trimester of 2022.

Of the 54.6 kilometers of tunnels (two tubes each 27.3 km), more than 80 percent now got completed. The two tunnel excavation devices are roughly 125 meters long and weigh 1,800 tons, with a diameter of around 10 meters. 'Ghega' completed the drive in two and a half years. The best drive performance was 34 meters daily, the best monthly performance of almost 550 meters.
