In the new Carinthia Package recently concluded between the Province of Carinthia and ÖBB, increasing safety at railroad crossings in Carinthia is a crucial component. One of the most neuralgic railroad crossings in Carinthia is the one with Waidmannsdorfer Straße. Klagenfurt's city senate and municipal council have approved the financing agreement between ÖBB and the city necessary for the construction. It represents a crucial milestone in the overall project, which cost around EUR 12.5 million. The project partners ÖBB and the City of Klagenfurt will each share 50% of the costs.

Gerald Zwittnig, Project Manager ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG: "The elimination of railroad crossings and thus the increase in safety for all road users is a very important concern for ÖBB. After the end of the currently ongoing official procedures and the conclusion of ÖBB's internal decisions, the next step will be the tendering phase. We are pleased that the City of Klagenfurt has decided to co-finance the underpass."

City Councilor Sandra Wassermann, Public Transport Officer: "This project is an important milestone for increasing traffic safety in the city. It will also better connect the Waidmannsdorf district with the city centre. The city is, therefore, a strong project partner for ÖBB. However, construction sites always bring temporary burdens. That's why it's especially crucial to do good educational work in advance, which is what we're doing with today's event, among other things."

Lasting relief for all road users

The busy railroad crossing will be replaced by a modern road underpass with a parallel sidewalk and bike path. In the process, Waidmannsdorfer Strasse will be lowered from the Ankershofenstrasse intersection and led under the ÖBB line. Upon completion, Dietrichstraße will no longer be connected to Waidmannsdorferstraße. Bahnstraße will be connected to Humboldstraße using an overpass. The measure brings:

  • higher safety due to the abandonment of the railroad crossing
  • higher safety through separation of car and pedestrian/bicycle traffic
  • accessibility due to moderate ramp gradients for the sidewalk and bike path
  • no closing and waiting times at barriers
  • traffic calming for residents by avoiding traffic jams
  • noise reduction for residents through low-level road traffic and closing the gaps in the noise barriers on the railroad side.

During an information evening this week, the citizens in the project area were informed about the current status. The common goal with the city is to minimize the impact during the construction phase for all road users (motorists, cyclists, pedestrians) and residents. To this end, a suitable traffic concept is being jointly developed in the course of the ongoing detailed planning.

The first preliminary work will start at the beginning of 2023 and will involve laying the lines, which will be carried out in particular by the Klagenfurt City Council and the Klagenfurt public utility company. As soon as the construction site area is cleared by the end of 2023, the main construction work will begin.
