ÖBB Train-Tech is investing massively in its 22 locations with around 600 million euros. As one of the largest engineering companies in Austria, ÖBB Train-Tech is an indispensable part of ÖBB as well as a partner for customers in the European rail maintenance market. In Vienna, Linz, St. Pölten, Knittelfeld, and Innsbruck, around 470 million euros are being invested in major projects to modernize the locations. In addition, 140 million euros will be invested in a total of 22 locations across Austria.

"The expansion of the fleet and the ordering of new trains also require the expansion and modernization of technical maintenance in the background. With our 4,000 employees, we ensure the maintenance of 22,000 trains and the refurbishment of 700,000 components. To be best prepared for the future, we are investing massively in our locations," says the Managing Director of ÖBB Train-Tech, Sandra Gott-Karlbauer, and adds: "However, we are not only investing in our operating facilities but also our colleagues. For example, we will be hiring around 1,000 employees over the next 5 years."

The investments in detail

In Vienna Simmering, around 33 million euros have already been invested in the construction of the new Nightjet hangar. In total, an additional 100 million euros will be invested in Simmering in the future for the expansion of the Nightjet hangars and the extension of the existing workshops. The extension will create a 235-meter-long annex to the newly built hall. In the final stage, the hall will be extended to 285 meters. This will enable the maintenance of longer trains in the future.

The location in Vienna Floridsdorf will be expanded for the maintenance of the new double-deck reversible trains. More than 80 million euros are required for the construction of the new workshops in which the new vehicles will be serviced and maintained in the future.

At the Linz location, the machinery for bogie production and wheelset reconditioning is already being modernized. Additional investments are planned for locomotive maintenance. In Knittelfeld, the modernization of halls and a new building are planned.

At the Innsbruck location, a total of €70 million is currently being invested in modernizing the halls for servicing new mainline trains and will continue to be invested over the next few years. A 285-meter-long, three-track maintenance workshop will be built. In addition, a catering building is being built for train catering.
