The planning and analysis of the expansion of the Northern Railway Section have been carried out by more than 90 experts engaged by ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG over the past few years. Following the European green course, the project was prepared with the avoidance of any environmental impact or the development of alternative measures. Experts from the Federal Ministry of Climate Protection are currently examining the documents for the northern section in their respective areas to assess whether the project is environmentally compatible.

It is planned that all stations in the northern section up to Bernhardsthal will be modern, attractive, and, most importantly, barrier-free. The project includes a complete renovation of the overhead lines and safety systems to the state-of-the-art, as well as a significant expansion of park and ride areas. Once completed, the line will increase the speed of trains and improve the route capacity, which is of international importance.
The possible start of construction of this section of the Northern Railway is currently scheduled for 2025.
