ÖBB aims to increase its self-sufficiency in traction power to 80 per cent in the coming years, thus improving its energy strategy. The project will cost the company an investment of EUR 1.6 billion.

In numbers, this means that the current supply level will be increased by 800 GWh of green electricity (currently 970 GWh), boosting the self-sufficiency of the company's operating capacity to 67 per cent and raising energy efficiency by 25 per cent.

Austrian Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler notes that self-generation of electricity reduces its cost and changes local independence and calls for following ÖBB's example of using land twice with its photovoltaic systems. In his turn, ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä emphasises that the company combines the energy and mobility transition into one.

Austria's ÖBB saves more than 4 million tonnes of CO2 per year through its transport services, making it one of the country's biggest climate protectors, which is why the production of clean electricity is at the heart of the company's ambitious environmentally friendly strategy.
