In May 2021, Austrian railway operator ÖBB and GE Renewable Energy teamed up to supply and commission two 85 MW variable speed pumped storage turbines for the new Tauernmoos pumped storage power plant in the Stubachtal/Austria Valley. One year later, ÖBB reports on its LinkedIn about the significant work progress on this project.

"The construction site of our pumped-storage power plant in Tauernmoos is well underway, with work being carried out simultaneously in many places. One important milestone: the underwater tunnel has been blasted! In the future, water will flow through it to the turbines. It will produce 100% renewable energy. To get more power into the traction current grid," says ÖBB.

The power plant in Tauernmus is designed for high flexibility and short reaction times to changes in loads. It will ensure quick starts, stops and transitions between turbine and pump operation. It will thus be the world's first new pumped storage pumping station with full power and variable speed technology, and one of the most flexible pumped storage pumping stations in the world.
