To make public transport in the Carinthia region more attractive and significantly increase the number of rail users, ÖBB is investing EUR 650 million in the renovation and modernization of the rail infrastructure over the next ten years.
"Carinthia's package for modern rail infrastructure has been signed! Carinthia will be transformed into a showcase rail region thanks to further investments of around 650 million euros. We are building the sustainable and modern railroads of tomorrow, clean mobility for us and our children," writes ÖBB on its LinkedIn.
The investment package includes projects on existing lines worth EUR 275 million, in which the province of Carinthia and the municipalities of Carinthia will also participate. The remaining EUR 375 million of investment is made up of ÖBB projects, such as the power plant in Obervellach, which is intended to further expand green power generation.
According to ÖBB CEO Andreas Matte, these investments should be understood as a response to the current climate and energy crisis. He said: "We are building the sustainable and modern railroad of tomorrow in addition to the approximately EUR 1.6 billion we are investing in the Koralm Railway construction. With the Obervellach power plant, we are also continuing to expand green traction production."
