Between Wienerbergstraße and Eibesbrunnergasse, the ÖBB expansion of the Pottendorf line will allow a higher frequency of trains and an expansion of the timetables in the morning and in the evening. The groundbreaking ceremony held for the last double-track section was with the attendance of the Vienna City Councilor Ulli Sima and ÖBB Infrastructure Board Member Judith Engel.

Rail is not the only thing that gets added during this project. 3.4 km of noise protection walls on both sides of the railway and a barrier-free gangway will be replacing the Pottendorfer Straße railway crossing. The bridge "Wittmayergasse" will be extended on a superstructure of the double-track line, on which a green roof will be partially installed. €542 million will be invested in the entire two-track expansion of the Pottendorf line and around €62 million is invested in the Vienna area.

“The desire to travel by train is growing. With the expansion of the Pottendorf line, we are making people in the south of Vienna an attractive mobility offer – earlier in the morning, more often during the day, and longer in the evening. This is a real alternative to driving, both for the daily commute to work or for going to the theatre in your free time. The prerequisite for this is a modern and efficient infrastructure that is geared towards people's needs. This is the only way we can achieve the mobility turnaround. At the end of 2023 we will be running on two tracks on the Pottendorf line. This gives us and our passengers more flexibility, more connections, more comfort, and, of course, barrier-free access in all stations. None of this would be possible without the good cooperation with our partners and the tireless work of our project team,” says ÖBB-Infrastructure Board Member Judith Engel.

Around 50-kilometre-long Pottendorf line between Wien Meidling and Wiener Neustadt has been double-tracked in sections, mostly during ongoing operations. The Pottendorfer line is the parallel supplementary and alternative line for the southern railway line. Once the last section of the Pottendorfer line is completed at the end of 2023, it will bring a four-track system between Wien Meidling and Wiener Neustadt.
