The ÖBB, which leads a consortium of 17 partners, has been awarded a contract for the research project Towards Automated Railway Operation (TARO) as part of the Mobility of the Future program of the Federal Ministry of Climate Protection. The project consists of three topic areas related to the digitalization and partial automation of the entire railway system, which will be worked on by railway companies, infrastructure operators, industry, and science.

The areas in question are as follows:

  • Digital Twin - has two projects, Digital Vehicle Twin (laying the groundwork for future digital mapping of the entire rail system) and Digital Infrastructure Twin (laying the groundwork for future (partially) automated rail operations)
  • Processes - rail freight projects: optimization of empty wagon dispatch, testing, and performance testing of the digital automatic coupler (DAK), and future shunting issues
  • Automated train control - regional rail technologies of the future (e.g., train control systems without external elements), provision of autonomous, digital elements along regional rail lines

The Federal Ministry for Climate, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation, and Technology (BMK) is funding a project totaling EUR 3.5 million under the RTI program Mobility of the Future administered by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG). The project has a duration of 3 years.
