Andreas Matthä, CEO of ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways), recently visited the Stadler facility in St. Margrethen, Switzerland, to review the production progress of the new double-decker trains—Cityjet and Railjet—that Stadler is manufacturing for ÖBB.

During his visit, Matthä met with Peter Spuhler, Chairman of the Board at Stadler, and observed the various stages of train production, expressing his admiration for the modern trains that result from the meticulous process.

According to ÖBB's CEO, the company is making a significant investment of over EUR 6 billion in 330 new trains over the coming years. It includes the double-decker trains produced by Stadler, which are expected to enhance passenger experience on the Westbahn route starting in 2026. The new double-decker Railjets will offer 480 seats, wide doors for quick boarding and alighting, and an exceptional upper-deck view of the passing landscape, providing a comfortable and scenic travel experience.

Meanwhile, the Cityjet battery-powered units, set to service the Kamptalbahn in Lower Austria by 2028, will help decarbonize regional rail transport by replacing diesel-powered trains and offering modern amenities like WiFi and automatic climate control. Spanning around 63 meters with a seating capacity of 160, they will feature barrier-free entrances and ergonomic seats with ample legroom.

Stadler, a Swiss manufacturer with a strong reputation for producing high-quality rail vehicles, is working diligently to meet ÖBB's specifications. The facility in St. Margrethen is known for its advanced production capabilities and its role in delivering innovative and efficient rail solutions.
