MERMEC manufactured the RIV following the requirements of the Build America, Buy America Act (BABAA). Aiming to capture the full track profile while travelling at speeds of up to 70 miles per hour, the company built the vehicle using high-tech sensors, lasers, cameras, measurement and data management systems. In turn, this will improve track maintenance, leading to fewer disruptions to the system during maintenance.
In addition, the RIV will be able to create 3D scans of the surface around the track, detecting anomalies in concrete sleepers and fasteners. Potential problems will also be detected using infrared thermal imaging in all light conditions, including tunnels.
