Alstom has delivered a Next Generation driving simulator to Metrorex, the operator of the Bucharest metro system, as part of its rolling stock contract for Line 5.
The cutting-edge simulator, installed at Valea Ialomitei station, is designed to train metro drivers and technicians in the safe and efficient operation of Metropolis metro trains using the latest virtual reality technologies. Metrorex has already completed the Site Acceptance Test, marking a significant step in preparing drivers for the fully operational Line 5.

The simulator integrates advanced Virtual Reality (VR) technologies, creating a highly realistic "digital twin" of the infrastructure, including tracks, stations, depots, and signaling equipment. The system also features a full-scale replica of the driver's cabin used in the Alstom Metropolis metro trains, which will soon operate on Line 5. Gabriel Stanciu, Alstom Managing Director for Romania, Bulgaria, and Moldova, said, "With the technological advancements available today, we're able to create a secure learning environment for future drivers and technicians, ensuring they possess the necessary skills to operate the latest generation of rolling stock responsibly."

The simulator will train Metrorex's instructors, who will then train drivers and technicians before passenger operations begin with the new trains. Six instructors are currently completing a comprehensive training program with Alstom experts. The system allows instructors to simulate various traffic conditions and potential operational issues, giving future drivers a thorough understanding of Line 5’s infrastructure. This is especially important as Line 5 is the first metro line in Romania to be equipped with the Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system, which enables 90-second headways between trains.
