Alstom to Maintain Nearly 90 Night Train Vehicles Across Sweden

Alstom has won a new contract to maintain SJ's night train fleet in Sweden for the next two years. The agreement will cover almost 90 rail vehicles and will keep overnight services running on key routes linking Stockholm with the country's northern regions.

The agreement covers close to 90 rail vehicles, including 12 locomotives and 75 passenger sleeper coaches, and secures Alstom's position in Sweden's rail maintenance market while supporting the development of Northern Sweden as a hub for advanced rail maintenance and lifecycle services.

Supporting the Future of Night Rail

The fleet primarily operates on the Stockholm–Umeå and Stockholm–Narvik routes. Maintaining the trains is challenging due to the technical complexity of sleeper coaches, onboard service systems and the age of the rolling stock.

Using its FlexCare Perform maintenance solutions, Alstom combines preventive maintenance, refurbishment and component replacement to maximise fleet availability and extend the service life of the existing trains while preparing operators for future fleet renewal. A key part of the programme is managing component obsolescence, helping ensure reliable operations over the long term.

Northern Sweden Becomes a Maintenance Hub

Most maintenance work will be carried out in Luleå, where Alstom has built extensive expertise covering both legacy and modern rolling stock. Around 60 employees based in Luleå, Umeå and Kiruna currently support the maintenance programme.

The company is also investing in its northern maintenance depots, which will become regional centres for expanding maintenance capacity and supporting future growth in rail transport across Sweden.
