A world-renowned infrastructure consulting firm Aecom has been awarded a contract to provide technical consulting services for Geelong Fast Rail for the Geelong High-Speed Rail project in a joint venture with GHD. The consulting services will cover technical and engineering issues, communications, and public and stakeholder engagement. The upgrades will provide broader regional transportation connections.
The Geelong Line project includes upgrades to Waurn Ponds station, construction of an 8-kilometer double-track section between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds, and the Waurn Ponds train maintenance and storage facility. It is part of the investment on the Geelong line, the upgrade of which will reduce travel time between the city and Melbourne's central office to 50 minutes, and generally provide more frequent and reliable rail service. The project is funded by the Commonwealth and state governments with total funding of A$4 billion (EUR 2.74 billion). The Victorian and Australian governments are also investing more than A$1 billion (EUR 685.2 million) in upgrading the Geelong Line as part of the Regional Rail Revitalization Program.
The Geelong Line, along with the Ballarat, Bendigo, and Gippsland lines, will be connected to the Melbourne Airport Rail line, providing passengers with greater connectivity as part of an integrated regional rail network. Work is scheduled to begin in 2023.
