Adif Alta Velocidad has started the construction of the Vera viaduct of the Murcia-Almería High-Speed Line (HSL). It is a new engineering milestone in the Spanish high-speed rail network development since it will be the first in the network to house four tracks.

The width of the viaduct will be its differentiating element instead of its length, as is usual in this kind of singular structure which, together with tunnels, allows the high-speed railway to overcome other infrastructures and the challenges of the orography with maximum respect and integration with the environment.

Specifically, the 172-meter-long Vera viaduct will be 28.7 meters wide, twice as wide as the 14 meters of the rest of the high-speed viaducts.

This new infrastructure will house the double track of the Murcia-Almeria high-speed line on its central deck and, on the sides, two single tracks, also of standard gauge, coming from the track bundle of the nearby Vera-Almanzora station to which the viaduct provides access.

The exceptional width of the viaduct determines its construction, which has just begun and will be a technical and logistical challenge. Thus, its foundations will require 14,000 cubic meters of concrete, that is, some 1,600 concrete mixer lorries, to build 134 piles.

The beams that will be laid on the piles to support the viaduct deck (the platform on which the tracks will later be installed) will be made of prefabricated concrete, and their weight and size (up to 42.4 meters and 191 tonnes) will require special transport and 300-tonne cranes to assemble them.

The viaduct, which will have unique seismic protection systems, will be built in the final part of the route between Pulpí and Vera to cross the A-352 dual carriageway, a crossing that will be solved with a span of 42.4 meters to avoid building pillars in the median of the road

Its construction also constitutes a new boost to the development of the Murcia-Almería high-speed line forming a strategic part of the Mediterranean Corridor, in which an estimated total investment of 3,300 million euros is foreseen and which already has all its sections under construction, except for the integration in Lorca and the second phase of integration in Almería.

The new viaduct will become part of the catalog of singular structures that Adif has built when developing the high-speed network, which this year will reach 4,000 kilometers in length, consolidating itself as the longest in Europe and the second longest in the world.

This catalog already includes, among others and due to different characteristics, the viaducts of Almonte and Tajo, on the high-speed railway to Extremadura; those of Ulla and Teixeira, on the high-speed railway to Galicia, or the one of Contreras, in the high-speed railway to Levante.
