Adif Alta Velocidad (Adif AV) has announced a new investment of EUR 9 million to oversee the control and technical assistance for the comprehensive transformation works at Barcelona Sants station.

This investment focuses on ensuring quality, safety, and environmental standards are met during the station’s extensive redevelopment, which aims to turn Barcelona Sants into a strategic node for future mobility. The contract, now put out to tender, will provide the necessary technical support to the works management team, enabling them to monitor and control the execution of the works.

Barcelona Sants, Catalonia's main railway station, is undergoing a significant transformation to become a more sustainable, multimodal, and citizen-oriented transport hub. The project reimagines the station as a central meeting point, integrating it seamlessly into the urban landscape and opening it up to social, cultural, and economic activities in the city. The redevelopment will create inclusive, accessible, and environmentally friendly spaces that align with the new city model.

The first phase of the transformation includes the expansion of the station on the Plaça dels Països Catalans side, featuring a new high-speed boarding hall to accommodate the rising number of passengers. This phase will also see the construction of a new access point for Rodalies, which will organize departure flows and create new areas for commercial experiences. Additionally, three new communication cores will be built with the platforms, and the interior space of the station will be rearranged to streamline travel transits across an area of 18,000 square meters.

Further developments include plans to restore Plaça dels Països Catalans to its original state, incorporating new green spaces, children's play areas, and rest areas. The project will also involve converting the current road in front of the square into an extension of public space, integrating it with the new station layout.

The final phase will prioritize the approach areas to the multimodal terminal, focusing on pedestrian and road access. The urban space next to the mountain side façade will be adapted to create a pedestrian route connecting Plaça dels Països Catalans and Plaça Joan Peiró, with additional provisions for private vehicles, taxis, and city buses on the seaside façade. The overall redevelopment plan involves 8,500 square meters around the station.
