Adif AV, Spain's administrator of the railway infrastructure, has announced that the drafting of the basic and construction projects for a new high-speed rail line between Burgos and Vitoria-Gasteiz has been awarded at a cost of €21 million.
The new line will be 101.3 km long and is expected to cost around €1.5 billion, with the final amount to be determined by the projects. The construction of the line is set to boost the development of the Atlantic Corridor, which will give continuity to the Madrid-Valladolid-Burgos high-speed line and connect the Basque Country to the high-speed network.

The new line will comprise two sections, Burgos-Pancorbo and Pancorbo-Vitoria/Gasteiz, both on double track, with a combined length of 90.1 km, as well as an 11.2-km single-track bypass in Miranda de Ebro, which will enable trains to stop in this town as well as non-stop circulation outside the municipality. This line will become the link between the high-speed network and the one being built to connect the three Basque capitals, which is commonly referred to as the 'Basque Y'.

Adif AV has divided the drafting of the construction projects into five lots, corresponding to each of the five subsections in which the future line is structured. The company has taken a decisive step towards the construction of the line by awarding the drafting of the project, which is the first step towards the tendering of works. The project is expected to have a significant impact on the development of the region's infrastructure and will bring about improved connectivity for passengers travelling through the area.
