Adif begins a new phase in the process of transforming Madrid-Chamartín Clara Campoamor into a benchmark station for sustainable and connected mobility, with which it will also strengthen its position as a strategic node for Cercanías Madrid and urban and metropolitan transport.

From 4 February until the end of December, it will tackle:

  • the extension of the main concourse to the north, providing more space for Cercanías, which will now have a separate area for passengers on urban and interurban journeys. To this end, the vestibule will be extended over the tracks, moving the stair and lift cores, and a new platform shelter will be built. From this new waiting and information area, Cercanías passengers will access the platforms via a new 1,300 m2 covered walkway;
  • the installation of track and signalling equipment between tracks 1 and 6 to improve the operation of the railway service – increasing flexibility and improving the facilities' response in the event of incidents – and the refurbishment of platforms 1, 2 and 3.

The works will be completed with the reinforcement of structures in the area of the urban square to absorb new loads resulting from the reorganisation of the roads. They will be carried out in parallel with the other actions that will transform Madrid-Chamartín Clara Campoamor into a strategic node for multimodal and integrated mobility in response to the increase in traffic associated with the liberalisation of passenger transport.

With an investment of 326 million euros, these works will double the capacity for high-speed trains and double the surface area of the concourse to the north, east and south. Likewise, 13 tracks and platforms destined for Cercanías will be remodelled, and the old Cercanías vestibule will be recovered under the tracks at the north end of the line, the Central vestibule, and, with it, the vertical communication cores between platforms and the interior one as well as the direct connection with the high speed and Metro de Madrid.

The transformation of Chamartín will make a decisive contribution to the development of Cercanías. Once the works are completed, the station will handle between 25% and 30% more passengers, up to 900 trains a day.

These actions are completed before the comprehensive remodelling of the station and its urban environment with a design proposal selected in an international competition. The planned investment in the transformation of Madrid-Chamartín Clara Campoamor will exceed 1,000 million euros.

More space for Cercanías and more connections

The actions that Adif is undertaking in Chamartín in the area of Cercanías, within the framework of the Cercanías Plan, those that will be carried out from 4 February and those that have already been underway for months, will provide the main concourse, enlarged to double its size, with a specific and larger space for Cercanías.

It will also facilitate more direct and efficient communication flows: from the new Cercanías' waiting and information area, extended to the north, passengers will access the platforms via a new covered walkway with a surface area of 1,300 m2. In addition, with the underground Central Hall, which will come into service shortly, Cercanías users will have a new connection between platforms and a new direct communication route between them and the Metro de Madrid, as an alternative to the main hall, as well as with the high-speed train.

In Madrid-Chamartín Clara Campoamor, Adif is also working on providing more capacity for more trains, fluid traffic and greater efficiency in resolving incidents.
