Adif and Adif Alta Velocidad (Adif AV) are moving forward with the preliminary stages of commissioning the new conventional gauge route between Xàtiva and Nudo de La Encina, a key component of the Mediterranean Corridor and the future high-speed connection between Valencia and Alicante.

Recently, reliability tests were successfully completed on a 447 series commercial train along the 45-km route. The commissioning process will continue with the training of train drivers and obtaining authorizations from the Spanish Railway Safety Agency (AESF).

The new conventional gauge route between Xàtiva and La Encina Junction is vital for the development of the Mediterranean Corridor, which connects the southeast and northeast of the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Europe. With an investment of €413 million, Adif will work on adapting the Xàtiva-Nudo de La Encina railway line for high-speed travel, at a project cost of €187 million.

The Mediterranean Corridor is a strategic project aimed at becoming a primary route for Spain's connections with Europe. It will provide a standard gauge connection for the Valencian Community, Andalusia, the Region of Murcia, and Catalonia with Europe. This infrastructure will boost the transport of goods by rail and provide a continuous corridor on the international gauge. The project is expected to generate €3.5 return on every euro invested and lead to a 2.2% increase in the country's GDP until 2030. It will also contribute to the fight against climate change by reducing CO2 emissions by up to 5.5 million tonnes per year.
