On May 6, 2022, the Prime Minister signed an agreement under which the European Union will provide Cameroon with EUR 123 million for the 330 km Belabo - Ngaoundere railway line modernization. The European Union provides a grant of EUR 17.1 million and the European Investment Bank a loan of EUR 106 million.

In addition to the generous EU funding, the project is to receive financial support from the Cameroonian government and the French development agency AFD.
"Upgrading Cameroon's national transport network is crucial to improve lives and create new opportunities for our people. I welcome the European Investment Bank's support for the Belabo-Ngaoundere railway. The EIB's largest-ever investment in Cameroon is a flagship of sustainable transport for our country and Africa," said Joseph Ngute, the Prime Minister.
This financing will provide half of the total project cost, estimated at EUR 243 million, and accelerate the reliability of freight and passenger rail traffic between central and northern Cameroon, as well as improve connections between the port of Douala, Chad and the Central African Republic. The rail project will provide a sustainable alternative to road transport, which is essential in today's climate change environment and solutions to combat it.

"The agreement is a decisive step in the renewal program for the entire operational railway network initiated at the end of the 1990s. With the PRBN [Bélabo-Ngaoundéré line renewal project], we will have 330 additional km of railway track renewed, approximately 30% of the national network," comments Ernest Massena Ngalle Bibehe, the Minister of Transport.
EIB Vice President Thomas Ostros, Minister of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development Alamine Ousmane Mey, and Phillipe Van Damme Ambassador of the European Union to Cameroon attended the ceremony, in addition to the prime minister and transport minister.
The project includes track modernization and engineering work, improvement of station facilities and increased safety at railway crossings. The line is expected to allow passenger trains to travel at 90 km/h and freight trains at 70 km/h. The work is expected to be completed in 2028, after which more than 1 million passengers will benefit from the improved transportation service, which, in turn, will stimulate economic growth and create jobs in northern Cameroon and along the route.
