As part of the EU Mission for 100 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities, the EU Commission has presented a list of 100 cities selected for the project. They represent 27 EU member states and are complemented by 12 country cities potentially or directly linked to the EU's Horizon Europe research and innovation program (2021-2027).

EUR 370 million from this program will be allocated to the EU Cities Mission 2022-23 to develop an innovation pathway to climate neutrality by 2030. The activities in this project are research and innovation-oriented and aim to promote energy efficiency, green mobility, and green urban planning. They also offer the possibility of creating joint initiatives and increasing cooperation with other EU programs.

"The green transition is making its way all over Europe right now. But there's always a need for trailblazers, who set themselves even higher goals. These cities are showing us the way to a healthier future," Ursula von der Leyen, President of the Commission, said.

A total of 377 cities have shown interest in the mission, and 100 have been chosen. They will have to develop a 'Climate Compact' including a 'Climate Neutral' outline for all sectors (i.e., energy, buildings, waste management, and transport) and relevant investment plans. To achieve all these goals, through these contracts, cities will be able to interact with the EU, national and regional authorities, and with their citizens. Cities will be provided with tailored advice, additional funding opportunities, the prospect of joining major innovation events and pilot projects, as well as assistance from the dedicated Mission platform managed by NetZeroCities.
