Alstom Wins €270m Order for 25 More X’trapolis Trains

The Victorian Government has ordered another 25 X’trapolis 2.0 trains from Alstom under a €270 million contract option, doubling the fleet being built in Victoria to 50 six-car electric trains.

Alstom has received a €270 million order from the Victorian Government for 25 additional X’trapolis 2.0 commuter trains, following the exercise of an option under the existing contract and brings the total number of X’trapolis 2.0 trains manufactured in Victoria to 50.

Alstom will build the new fleet across its facilities in the Australian state. The programme is supporting local rail manufacturing and secure work for suppliers in both metropolitan and regional Victoria.

X’trapolis 2.0 Fleet Doubles to 50 Trains

The X’trapolis 2.0 is based on Alstom’s Adessia commuter train platform but has been adapted for the needs of Victoria’s rail network. The additional order means that Alstom will now manufacture 50 X’trapolis 2.0 trains in Victoria, rather than the original fleet of 25.

Each train consists of six cars and has been developed in cooperation with the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning. The programme includes a requirement for 60% local content, with a large part of the production and supply chain based in Victoria. Alstom says the new order will secure hundreds of skilled manufacturing jobs across the state.

The work will involve companies in both Melbourne and regional areas, extending the impact of the contract beyond Alstom’s own production sites.

New Trains Will Carry More Than 1,200 Passengers

According to Alstom's press release, each X’trapolis 2.0 train can carry up to 1,225 passengers. The six-car units have a continuous walk-through interior, allowing passengers to move more easily between cars. Wider doors will speed up boarding and help reduce the time trains spend at stations.

The design also includes 20 wheelchair spaces, and areas for prams, bicycles and other mixed uses. Other accessibility features include semi-automated ramps, tactile signage and hearing assistance technology. Alstom has also introduced a revised interface between passengers and the driver.

First X’trapolis 2.0 Entered Service in May

The first X’trapolis 2.0 train entered passenger service in Victoria in May 2026. Further units are expected to follow gradually as production continues. The new trains will replace part of a legacy fleet that has operated on the network since the early 1980s.

The additional order gives the Victorian Government a larger group of modern electric trains with the same design and technical platform. It also allows Alstom to continue production rather than ending the programme after the first 25 units.

For passengers, the transition will take place in stages as more of the locally built trains complete testing and enter regular service.

Alstom Builds on Its Adessia Commuter Platform

The X’trapolis 2.0 belongs to Alstom’s Adessia family of commuter trains. According to the manufacturer, more than 48,000 commuter rail cars based on its solutions have been sold worldwide. They are used across 60 commuter rail systems and carry more than 20 million passengers each day.

The Victorian version combines that existing platform with local manufacturing requirements and features developed specifically for the state’s network.
