The railway journey from Inverness to Thurso in the Scottish Highlands takes passengers along the UK's northernmost railway, Scotland’s Far North Line. This line is of historical significance and has a dedicated campaign group, the Friends of the Far North Line, working towards its preservation.
The track crosses the Beauly Firth, Cromarty Firth, and Dornoch Firth, eventually running alongside the North Sea. Some significant landmarks, such as Foulis Castle, coastal distilleries, and Skibo Castle, are visible from the train. Steam trains are occasionally seen on this line, adding to its charm.
The trip is approximately three hours and 45 minutes long. At the end of the journey, passengers can choose to stay at The Royal Hotel, which is situated in the centre of Thurso, just half a mile from the station and near the shoreline. The hotel has two dining options, the formal Hyde Restaurant, and the more casual Invictus Bar.
The cost of a single ticket for this journey is around £19.80. If passengers choose to stay at the Royal Hotel, the starting price is approximately £53 per night, a rate that includes breakfast and dinner. This journey offers a unique opportunity to experience the scenic beauty of the Scottish Highlands while travelling along a historic railway line.
