The new Cityjet Desiro ML (MainLine) commuter trains will be in service for VVT in Tyrol on the route between Innsbruck and Kufstein from the beginning of October 2023. Gradually, operations will be extended to the line between Landeck and Innsbruck and, from June 2024, between Wörgl and Salzburg.

Currently, the car bodies are at ÖBB Train Tech's Jedlersdorf plant in Vienna where the exterior design of the new Cityjet fleet for Tyrol was finalized. ÖBB and the province of Tyrol released a glimpse of the new trains for the first time and thus a foretaste of what passengers in Tyrol can look forward to from the fall. A unique feature of the new trains: being 100 meters long, they are the longest local trains in Tyrol and thus offer a total of 290 seats. Several work steps are still required at the factory before the trains can go into service. The first of a total of 20 vehicles will be completed this year. They will be transferred to the Tyrol in August and used for training purposes until passenger service starts in October.

Proven vehicle type with modern features

Siemens Desiro ML commuter trains have already been on the rails for ÖBB since 2015 and have proven themselves successfully. Initially mainly in the eastern region, since 2021, they have also been on the road in western Austria.

Werner Dilitz, Regional Manager Tyrol at ÖBB-Personenverkehr AG: "With the Cityjet Desiro ML, the local transport fleet in Tyrol is getting top modern trains. For example, commuters can use the available WLAN to work during the train ride or simply charge their cell phones via a USB connection. With more spaces for bicycles, sporty passengers also get their money's worth."

René Zumtobel, Regional Mobility Councillor in Tyrol, says, "I already got an impression of the new sets in Vorarlberg at the beginning of the year and am looking forward to the delivery. With them, we are offering more space and more comfort and thus upgrading the entire public transport offering in Tyrol in terms of both quantity and quality. Quality is one of the most important pillars of public transport – with comfortable, state-of-the-art vehicles that can carry more passengers, we are making a further contribution to the mobility revolution in Tyrol."
