On April 22, 1992, the people of Guadalajara, Mexico, experienced one of the deadliest train accidents in history. A series of gas explosions caused by a leak in the city's sewer system led to the derailment of a freight train carrying hazardous chemicals, which in turn caused a chain reaction that resulted in multiple explosions across the city.

The death toll from the Guadalajara train disaster was estimated to be between 206 and 252 people, with thousands more injured and homeless. The explosions caused significant damage to buildings and infrastructure, with the cost estimated to be in the millions of dollars.

The cause of the disaster was traced back to a gasoline leak in the city's sewer system, which had been ongoing for several days. When the train carrying hazardous chemicals passed over the leak, sparks from the train's wheels ignited the gas, leading to massive explosions.

The disaster profoundly impacted the people of Guadalajara and the wider region, with many left traumatized by the scale of the destruction. In the aftermath of the disaster, several safety measures were put in place, including improved monitoring of hazardous materials transportation and stricter regulations for gas pipelines and sewage systems.

Today, the memory of the Guadalajara train disaster serves as a reminder of the importance of safety in the transportation of hazardous materials, as well as the need for ongoing efforts to maintain and improve critical infrastructure.
