At the end of December, the Hungarian government approved the strategy of the Budapest railway junction, which defines the development of the railway network of the capital and its metropolitan area until 2040.
- at least four trains per hour departing from each stop in the metropolitan area towards Budapest
- the city should reach at least the lines directly from all railway lines in the metro area
- the projects should double the suburban ridership of MÁV services
- The government will make all passenger transport services through a single pass/ticket within the whole region
The total value of the investment is EUR 10 billion, a third of which is already available by 2029 and to be part-financed by the Resilience and Recovery Plan, the Connecting Europe Facility, and the EU's Multiannual Financial Framework 2021-2027.
The strategy contains an indicative list of investments related to the development of heavy railway infrastructure and the currently closed HÉV suburban network, other exchanges, and expansion of rolling stock and railway services, emphasizing digitalization of traffic.
