Many residents find this service convenient and economical for travelling home at weekends.
China has resumed the operation of the high-speed rail link between the mainland and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. It was after a nearly three-year hiatus caused by restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The first high-speed train left Hong Kong's West Kowloon railway station for Shenzhen on January 15 at 7.03 a.m. local time (2.03 p.m. CET), Xinhua news agency reported.
"Today will be a memorable day. The resumption of high-speed rail service is of great significance to the overall connection between Hong Kong and the mainland," said Liao Jun, a student from Jiangxi province studying in Hong Kong. High-speed trains have resumed running south to Hong Kong from the northern railway station in Shenzhen.
Many Hong Kong residents working in Shenzhen find the service a convenient and economical option for travelling home on weekends. China Railway Guangzhou Group said it would provide an average of 38.5 pairs of high-speed trains a day from Guangzhou and Shenzhen to Hong Kong's West Kowloon Station in the initial phase of resuming service.
In the future, the Company will optimize the operation schedule according to passenger flow and promote the orderly revival of cross-border high-speed rail services.
