Semmering is a legendary mountain railway in Austria. For its uniqueness, it is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is situated on the line between Vienna and Ljubljana. The mountain panoramas begin to emerge after passing through the town of Gloggnitz.
The track overcomes an elevation of 0.5 kilometers on a very short section. The overall impression is enhanced by numerous tunnels, passages through gorges and all in the tight grip of the mountain massifs.
But what makes Semmering really unique? It measures about 40 kilometers, on which we can find15 tunnels, 130 bridges and 16 viaducts. It has been in operation since 1854. If we consider the project’s year of construction, it is a real technical marvel. For these reasons Semmering was listed in the UNESCO in 1994.
