Finnish railway operator VR ended its cooperation with Russia. The Finnish side had already announced earlier that it would stop cooperating with Russian railways, leaving only some cross-border services that would allow Finnish citizens to leave Russia. After the European skies were closed to Russian aircraft, the demand for travel to the EU also increased among Russian citizens who want to leave Russia. But now this 'window to the EU' is also closed.
On Sunday, March 27th, only the morning train from Helsinki to St Petersburg was operated and the afternoon train, AE786, was canceled. Both services from St Petersburg, on Sunday, were operated. VR’s customer can cancel their Allegro tickets, which they have purchased for the train services that are now canceled, without any costs.
“Thus far we have been continuing the Allegro train services, according to the instructions by the relevant authorities and hence making sure that we can provide a safe passage to the Finnish citizens. During these weeks, the people, who have wanted to depart from Russia, have had adequate time to leave. Now, due to the sanctions, we will discontinue the service for now”, says Topi Simola, SVP for Passenger Services at VR Group.
