Wednesday morning turned into an unimaginable tragedy in Thailand’s northeast, when a large construction crane collapsed directly onto a passing passenger train. The incident left at least 22 people dead and dozens injured, according to initial reports. Following the impact, several carriages derailed and caught fire, trapping passengers amid smoke, flames, and debris.

Seconds From Disaster: Crane Falls Directly Onto Train

According to Agence France-Presse, the accident occurred shortly after 9:00 a.m. local time in Nakhon Ratchasima province. Thailand’s Ministry of Transport stated that 195 passengers were travelling aboard the train at the time of the crash. The crane, intended to support the construction of new rail infrastructure, struck the train while it was moving at full speed.

Footage from the scene shows overturned carriages scattered beside the tracks, thick black smoke rising from wreckage ignited by the impact, and rescue teams struggling to extract survivors from twisted steel structures. While AFP cited 22 fatalities, Reuters reported 19 deaths and approximately 80 injuries. Authorities warned that casualty figures could still rise due to the critical condition of many victims.

Billion-Dollar Rail Project With Chinese Backing

The crane was part of the construction of an ambitious high-speed rail project intended to connect Bangkok with Kunming in China via Laos by 2028. Valued at USD 5.4 billion (approximately EUR 5 billion), the project is a key element of China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

In the region, large-scale infrastructure projects backed by China have frequently drawn criticism over accelerated construction schedules and intense deadline pressure. Thailand itself has long faced scrutiny for weak enforcement of safety standards at construction sites and within the transport sector—factors that have contributed to repeated fatal accidents.

A Grim Record for Thai Railways

Industrial and transport-related disasters are not uncommon in the country. The incident recalls a 2020 collision between a freight train and a bus, which claimed 18 lives. However, the collapse of a construction crane onto a live passenger service raises renewed concerns over safety practices during the development of future rail corridors, which are promoted as flagship projects for Asian transport connectivity.
