Siemens Mobility has revealed a full-scale model of the train set to run on the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport line. The life-sized mock-up gives a first glimpse of the future metro system, which will connect St. Marys to the new Western Sydney International Airport and Bradfield City Center.

Siemens Mobility and its Parklife Metro consortium partners have hit a key milestone in the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project by unveiling a full-scale train mock-up. It is a crucial step in Australia’s first turnkey metro project, where Siemens will deliver 12 driverless trains and key rail infrastructure.

"The high-fidelity train mock-up for the Sydney Metro - Western Sydney Airport turnkey project has arrived in Australia and marks another milestone for us," said Léon Soulier, CEO of Siemens Mobility’s Turnkey Business Unit. "We are excited about our project in Sydney stretching 23 kilometers from St. Marys to the new airport and Bradfield City Center. This new line will support 14,000 jobs during construction, fueling growth for both New South Wales and the national economy."

What’s New Inside the Train?

The mock-up showcases the final design before manufacturing begins. It allowed engineers and project teams to test and finalize details like lighting, emergency features, and passenger information systems. Some standout features include:

  • Large windows for wide views of Western Sydney.
  • Spacious interiors with flexible seating and standing areas.
  • Wide double doors for fast and smooth boarding.
  • Dedicated spaces for wheelchairs.

The new train also has a unique local touch. The seats feature custom artwork inspired by the Cumberland Plain, where the metro line will run. Grey and blue patterns represent the night sky in Western Sydney, while yellow priority seats illustrate meeting places near waterholes, surrounded by wattle flowers.

The Big Picture: A Game-Changer for Western Sydney

Siemens Mobility is leading the EUR 900 million contract to deliver a fully automated metro system. The project includes:

  • Driverless trains with cutting-edge digital systems.
  • Signaling, electrification, and telecoms infrastructure.
  • 15 years of maintenance and digital asset management.

The 23-kilometer metro line will be a game-changer for Sydney’s west, offering fast, reliable, and sustainable transport between St. Marys, the new airport, and Bradfield City Center. With the train design now finalized, full production is set to begin, bringing Sydney one step closer to a world-class metro system.
