Renfe, the Spanish national railway operator, has signed a contract with the Swiss company Stadler to supply 59 high-capacity electric trains for the Cercanías commuter system, serving the country's largest metropolitan areas.
Under the € 998 million contract, Stadler will build 24 100m trains and 35 200m trains for Renfe. The rolling stock will be assembled at the Stadler plant in Valencia, creating 500 new jobs in the region. Stadler is also committed to maintaining the trains and supplying spare parts for them for 15 years.
The new rolling stock will replace the outdated CAF-built Civia trains. Each of the 100-meter trains is designed to carry 900 people. (20% more than Civia). At least 10 doors on each side of the train and spacious areas in front of them will speed up the embarkation and disembarkation of passengers at stations. The trains will be designed to carry passengers with reduced mobility and accommodate wheelchairs and bicycles.
In March 2021, Renfe's Board of Directors approved the selection of Stadler and Alstom as suppliers of 211 trains for the Cercanías system.
