A framework agreement for the delivery of up to 510 single-decker FLIRT multiple units has been signed by Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), Thurbo, RegionAlps and Stadler.

Stadler has won the largest tender in Swiss rail history with the proven FLIRT vehicle concept after the Swiss Federal Administrative Court rejected the objection of an unsuccessful bidder from last year. Under the initial call-off order, Stadler will supply 286 vehicles, with an order value of around CHF two billion. SBB, Thurbo and RegionAlps are ordering 155 four-car FLIRT trains, 24 four-car FLIRT trains and 19 four-car and 88 three-car FLIRT trains respectively. The new trains will replace old rolling stock and are expected to begin service from December 2025. The framework agreement also includes an option for up to 224 additional FLIRT vehicles.

It has been reported that the recent FLIRT trains come with a range of benefits for passengers, such as additional storage space for luggage, pushchairs and bicycles, and areas for winter sports equipment. They have power outlets in all compartments and offer good mobile phone and data reception on the move. They also have step-free boarding and step-free accessibility throughout, accommodating passengers with reduced mobility, including spaces for wheelchairs and a wheelchair-accessible toilet. These trains are to be approved for Switzerland, Germany and Austria.

Peter Spuhler, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Group CEO ad interim of Stadler, expressed the company's pride to build the new trains and to contribute to Swiss regional transport. The FLIRT model from Stadler is a single-decker multiple unit that has been sold more than 2,500 times in 21 countries. FLIRT trains build on tried and tested system modules, making them cost-effective vehicles that can be optimized to meet customer needs. In addition to models with a purely electric, diesel or mixed drive, Stadler also produces FLIRT vehicles with alternative drives such as battery and hydrogen. Stadler holds the world record for the longest journey in a battery-powered train in battery-only mode with its battery-powered FLIRT.
