The Value for Money Unit of the Ministry of Finance of Slovakia has recently addressed several recommendations to the train carrier, thanks to which Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK) could save up to 130 million per year, which could be used for the development and improvement of services.

One of the measures recommended by ZSSK's Value for Money Unit is a 30% increase in ticket prices. As a first cost-saving measure, ZSSK has chosen to optimise the timetable, which in practice means that where trains are most needed, services have been strengthened and, conversely, where they are least used, they have been reduced.

According to Rastislav Farkaš, an analyst at the Value for Money Unit of the Ministry of Finance, fares on Slovak trains are the cheapest among neighbouring countries and have not increased since 2011. "The ministry has considered a possible fare increase several times, but no political consensus has been found for this step. Therefore, possible price increases will be the responsibility of the next government," explained Martin Petro from the Communication Department of the Slovak Transport Ministry.

Another measure recommended by ZSSK's Value for Money Unit is to reduce the number of sales windows to at least forty and leave them only in the largest cities, e.g., as is the case in Austria or Hungary. The railway carrier plans to charge a 50 per cent service charge for ticket sales at the ticket window at the station from the second half of this year.

Currently, ZSSK has 15 ticket vending machines deployed at stations, 10 of which are in Tatranské elektrozubačky and the remaining five in stations in Prešov, Poprad-Tatry, Stary Smokovec, Štrbské Pleso and Tatranská Lomnica. However, this automatic sale serves only for the purchase of selected tickets up to a distance of 50 kilometres. However, the railway company is planning to purchase more of these machines, but it is still only preparing the documents for public procurement. In addition to automatic sales, ZSSK wants to encourage passengers to buy more tickets via the Internet or mobile apps.
