photo: RAILTARGET/Siemens Vectron 393 AC Locomotives: A Leap in Electric Train Technology with Auxiliary Diesel Support
The enhanced 393 series electric locomotives are equipped with four axles and can operate on two different traction systems. This interoperable two-system variant enables Siemens Vectron 393 AC locomotives to reach speeds of up to 200 km/h. They are adapted for use on 15 kV (16.2/3 Hz) and 25 kV (50 Hz) AC traction systems.
One of the new features of these machines is the auxiliary diesel engine, referred to as the Diesel Power Module (DPM). This module allows the locomotive to operate on handling tracks and sidings where overhead lines are not available, or during shunting. The 180 kW diesel power unit is located in the engine room of the locomotive and is fed by a fuel tank. This system provides additional flexibility when operating the locomotive in locations where electric power is not available.

One of the key features of the Vectron AC 393 is its flexibility and modularity. This locomotive is designed to be adaptable to the needs of different operators. The modular design allows for easy maintenance and component replacement, reducing the time that must be spent out of service. The Czech national freight carrier ČD Cargo, for example, has added these locomotives to its fleet.
