Siemens Mobility and its partners are revolutionizing Thailand’s rail systems. New contracts aim to modernize Bangkok’s Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) and enhance intercity connectivity through the Den Chai–Chiang Rai–Chiang Khong line.

The MRT Orange Line is a 35.9-kilometer route connecting Bangkok’s east and west through a mix of underground and elevated tracks. Siemens Mobility, partnering with Bozankaya and ST Engineering, has secured a comprehensive contract to deliver 32 state-of-the-art three-car trains. These trains will feature modern interiors, advanced air conditioning, and enhanced passenger information systems, ensuring a high level of comfort and accessibility.

Additionally, according to a press release from Siemens Mobility, the company will provide cutting-edge mechanical and electrical systems, including signaling, communications, platform screen doors, and passenger information systems. This solution aligns with Bangkok’s sustainability goals, using energy-efficient technology to reduce the Orange Line’s carbon footprint significantly. MarketScreener reports that Siemens Mobility has also been awarded long-term maintenance contracts, ensuring the Orange Line remains reliable and efficient for years to come.

Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility, stated: "With over 30 years of trusted partnership in Thailand, we are delighted to continue to help Bangkok grow sustainably and shape travel in the country for generations to come. With 53 new trains, advanced signaling systems, and long-term maintenance services, even more people will be able to reach their destination quickly and emission-free."

Siemens Mobility to Upgrade the MRT Blue Line

The MRT Blue Line, spanning 48 kilometers with 38 stations, has been a vital part of Bangkok’s public transport since its launch in 2002. According to MarketScreener, Siemens Mobility’s new contract includes the delivery of 21 additional trains and significant upgrades to the line’s signaling and SCADA systems which will improve capacity, efficiency, and reliability, accommodating the growing number of daily commuters. Siemens will also extend full-service maintenance contracts until 2039, covering rolling stock, signaling, and communications systems.

Expanding Intercity Rail Connectivity with Siemens Mobility

Siemens Mobility is also advancing Thailand’s intercity rail network with the Den Chai–Chiang Rai–Chiang Khong double-track railway project. This 219-kilometer line, divided into two segments, will significantly enhance connectivity in Northern Thailand. The first segment of 132 kilometers includes 11 stations, while the second, covering 87 kilometers, features seven stations.

Key to the project is the deployment of Centralized Traffic Control (CTC) and Automatic Train Protection (ATP) systems compliant with European Train Control System (ETCS Level 1) standards. Siemens will provide advanced signaling solutions, including Trackguard Westrace MKII interlocking, Clearguard ACM250 axle counters, and DC track circuits. The project will localize much of the engineering work in Thailand, supported by Siemens experts from Spain, Australia, and Germany.
