A Masterpiece of Austrian Infrastructure
The Semmering Bahn stands as Europe’s first standard-gauge mountain railway and holds the global title of the world’s first mountain railway. Planning for this extraordinary project began in 1841. Today, the railway remains fully operational, providing passengers with an unforgettable experience of Austria’s spectacular landscapes.
Not only is the Semmering Railway historically significant, but its architectural brilliance has also earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The railway spans 41.7 kilometers, linking the towns of Gloggnitz and Mürzzuschlag. Along its route, trains pass through 14 tunnels, cross 16 viaducts—some of which are double-deck structures—and traverse 11 rail bridges. The line also boasts 118 stone bridges of smaller dimensions, ensuring breathtaking views for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.
Beauty Comes at a Cost
Semmering Bahn is an integral part of the rail line connecting Vienna with Graz in Styria. It even extends beyond Austria, offering connections to Slovenia. The Railway’s Impact on a Small Austrian Town
The village of Semmering, home to about 600 residents, lies along the railway. The construction and popularity of the Semmering Railway brought hordes of tourists to the town, initially overwhelming the small community. Many early visitors came from Vienna, boosting the local economy and facilitating the town’s growth. While tourism has since tapered off, the town still attracts adventurers eager to experience the charm of Austrian nature.
The Birth of an Iconic Railway
Construction of the Semmering Railway began in 1848 and was completed in 1854. Designed by architect and engineer Carl von Ghega, the project required innovative techniques inspired by his studies in England and Belgium. Around 20,000 workers participated in the railway’s construction, a third of whom were women. Sadly, 89 workers lost their lives, and hundreds more succumbed to illnesses.
The first train traversed the tracks on October 23, 1853, but the railway was officially inaugurated on May 16, 1854. Two days later, the line welcomed its first freight train, and by July 17, passengers were able to enjoy the breathtaking views of Austria’s alpine landscapes.
