Lithuanian customs officials have uncovered military equipment on trains traveling from Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave to Moscow. According to authorities, the shipments were intended for Russian troops in Ukraine. Lithuania, a strong ally of Kyiv, plans to hand over the confiscated items to Ukraine as military support.

Lithuanian customs discovered military uniforms and camouflage nets on trains traveling from Kaliningrad to Moscow, reported the news site Euro-Asia Daily. Kaliningrad, a small yet heavily militarized region, is located between the Baltic Sea and NATO countries Poland and Lithuania.

It is important to note that Lithuanian authorities oversee the railway connection that crosses their territory, linking Kaliningrad with Belarus and Russia. During inspections between September 27 and October 2, four shipments of various military materials were seized, the source added. These shipments included five pairs of military camouflage pants and several camouflage nets intended to cover weapons, which were found at the Kybartai railway station near the border with the exclave. The pants were confiscated as items of potential military use, as such clothing is designed for camouflage purposes.

"These packages, according to customs officials, were meant for Russian units fighting in Ukraine, and are typically sent by members of various volunteer organizations operating in Russia’s Kaliningrad region. The seized goods are being handed over by Lithuanian customs as support for Ukraine," the officials stated, as reported by The Kyiv Independent. They also noted that the transportation of military goods requires a special one-time permit issued by the Ministry of Defense, but such documents are not currently being issued.

Vilnius believes these shipments were intended for Russian armed forces deployed in Ukraine. Since the outbreak of the war and the subsequent deterioration of relations with Moscow, Lithuania has become a strong advocate for Ukraine.

The Soviet Union annexed Lithuania and the other Baltic states during World War II, with Lithuania regaining its independence only in 1990.
