A Groundbreaking Investment and Technological Advancements
In 2022, the three railway companies jointly ordered 286 Flirt Evo trains from Stadler, investing approx. EUR 2.1 billion, as RAILMARKET reports. These trains will replace older models, improving operational efficiency and passenger experience across multiple regions. "We are excited to see the first Flirt Evo trains roll out, representing a milestone in SBB’s commitment to modernizing regional travel," said Vincent Ducrot, CEO of SBB. "These new trains will be the flagship of our regional fleet, bringing innovation and quality to nearly every part of Switzerland."
The Flirt Evo trains feature numerous technological improvements to meet modern travel needs. As noted by Railway Supply, the trains are equipped with spacious multifunctional zones, which offer more room for bicycles, strollers, and luggage, making them more user-friendly for all passengers. Additionally, power outlets are available in all compartments, and improved mobile connectivity ensures seamless internet access throughout the journey. Accessibility is also a key focus, with the trains offering two wheelchair spaces per unit, including in first class, and a wheelchair-accessible restroom. The eco-friendly climate control systems use propane (R290), reducing environmental impact. Enhanced motorization contributes to better punctuality and smoother operations.
Cross-Border Connectivity and Fleet Standardization
The new trains are designed for cross-border operation, and certified for use in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and France. This move will allow the Flirt Evo trains to replace older, less efficient models, such as the Domino, Flirt first-generation, GTW, and Nina trains, which are set to be retired by 2034. The companies will benefit from operational synergies, streamlining maintenance processes, and optimizing train management across borders. Yves Marclay, Director of RegionAlps, stated, "The arrival of the Flirt Evo trains in Valais is eagerly anticipated. These new units will provide greater capacity during peak hours and cater to the growing demand for leisure travel in the region."
