ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG has already initiated the first planning steps for the next important major project in Vorarlberg: The double-track expansion of the so-called Klosterbogen, an approximately 1.4 km long section at the eastern entrance to Bludenz station. The next project step will now be the surveying work to establish the border.

The Arlbergbahn line is one of the main lines in the approximately 5,000-kilometre long ÖBB network in Austria and at the same time a challenging and imposing mountain railroad that connects Vorarlberg with the rest of Austria. To ensure that the railroad is equipped for future challenges, ÖBB will be implementing extensive measures on both sides of the Arlberg in the coming years with the aim of increasing timetable stability and thus punctuality in long-distance traffic on the Arlberg. ÖBB is therefore continuing to invest heavily in the expansion of the rail infrastructure in Vorarlberg. An important major project in the next few years is the double-track expansion of the so-called Klosterbogen, starting from the eastern entrance of Bludenz station in the direction of Arlberg. ÖBB is currently starting the planning for this in coordination with the federal government, the state of Vorarlberg and the city of Bludenz.

ÖBB's major Klosterbogen project as the next important step in Vorarlberg

The double-track expansion of the approximately 1.4 km long section is the next important step in the ÖBB infrastructure quality offensive in Vorarlberg. For long-distance trains, this will improve the crossing situation in the Bludenz area in the future, resulting in further stabilization of punctuality and thus an increase in quality. Measures accompanying the project, such as new noise barriers that meet the latest standards, will provide even better protection for residents in the future. The intersection of the two-state roads L190 and L97 is also to be rebuilt in cooperation with the state of Vorarlberg and the city of Bludenz and made more pedestrian and bicycle-friendly.

Surveying work and boundary determination as to the next project step

The planning start for the double-track extension of the Klosterbogen by the project team of ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG has already taken place. The first stage now provides for surveying work and boundary determinations on the adjoining properties. The surveying office commissioned by ÖBB will contact the property owners and establish the boundaries. This preliminary work will form the basis for further planning and the subsequent official approval processes. In addition, it is planned to carry out further investigations and an environmental impact assessment (EIA) for this section in the coming years. ÖBB's experts and the contracted planners are working towards completing the submission planning for the major project by 2024 and subsequently submitting it for EIA approval.
