From 11 to 15 August, more than 1.2 million passengers travelled on the national carrier's trains. PKP Intercity thus beat last year's result and set a new attendance record during the long August weekend.

PKP Intercity enjoys consistently high popularity among travellers. After a record-breaking May and June, the national carrier can once again boast the highest result in its history. During the long August weekend, more than 1.2 million passengers used PKP Intercity connections. It is 300,000 more than in the same period last year. The day with the highest attendance turned out to be Friday, 11 August. Almost 254 thousand passengers boarded the carrier's trains on that day. Each day during the long weekend, an average of over 244 thousand people travelled with PKP Intercity.

"Another long weekend and another record. We are constantly working to make travel with PKP Intercity affordable for all Poles. More than one million passengers in just five days is a very high result and proof that the role of railways in holiday travel is growing," says Tomasz Gontarz, Vice President of the Board of PKP Intercity.

Carrying more than one million passengers would not have been possible without additional rolling stock support. PKP Intercity reinforced 147 trains with additional 175 coaches between 11 and 15 August. Two more diesel multiple units also went on the tracks. Longer trainsets appeared on routes between the largest agglomerations and connections to the largest tourist centres such as Tri-City, Olsztyn, Ustka, Kołobrzeg and Świnoujście.

Historic attendance at PKP Intercity

The high freight performance over the August long weekend reflects a trend that PKP Intercity has maintained since the beginning of the year. From January to July 2023, nearly 38 million passengers boarded the carrier's trains. The above figures indicate that the company is likely to carry more than 60 million passengers by December.
