PKP Intercity has introduced the WiFiX system, a significant technological advancement aimed at improving passengers' internet access on its trains.
Developed early this year and now operational, WiFiX enables real-time monitoring of Wi-Fi network performance and equipment functionality, ensuring passengers enjoy uninterrupted internet service. This innovation allows for the precise location of wagons or EMUs, assessment of internet service quality across different sections of a route, and detailed analysis of network operation through data visualization tools.

Tomasz Gontarz, vice-president of PKP Intercity's management board, emphasizes the importance of internet access for passenger satisfaction and the company's dedication to service improvement. "We have introduced a proprietary monitoring system which, combined with the aforementioned and modern devices, gives freedom to join and use the network. I am pleased that this change is progressing. We want all our vehicles to be able to connect to the wireless Internet over the years," says Gontarz. Currently, the monitored devices enabling internet access are installed in over 720 vehicles, with more to come in the future.

The success of onboard Wi-Fi systems depends on various factors, including geographical location, equipment condition, mobile network provider performance, and weather conditions. PKP Intercity has taken proactive steps to mitigate these challenges by installing 550 mobile network repeaters and advanced GSM/Wi-Fi routers that leverage multiple mobile networks to ensure stable internet connectivity. Looking forward, the company aims to expand its central diagnostic system, achieve full Wi-Fi coverage across its fleet by 2030, and enhance the maintenance of onboard systems, demonstrating an unwavering focus on delivering superior service quality to its passengers.
