This year's May turned out to be the month with the highest number of passengers in the over 20-year history of PKP Intercity. What's more, the carrier has never before recorded such a good result after the first five months of the year - more than 20 million people have already used the carrier's services since the beginning of January. The number of passengers will continue to grow because nearly three-quarters of Poles have already planned a holiday trip or want to go somewhere.

In May this year, 5.26 million people travelled on PKP Intercity trains. This is 28% more than in May 2019 - a record year so far in the carrier's history. The 2019 result was also improved when looking at the January-May period. Since the beginning of this year, more than 20.1 million passengers have already used PKP Intercity's services. This is 8% better than in the corresponding period of the last year before the pandemic. It is also more than twice as much as in the first five months of last year (9.25 million passengers).

The record results in May were largely influenced by, among others, the introduction of the Promo offer to economy category trains. From that moment, every week PKP Intercity trains are used by more than a million people. This is about 40-45% more than in the corresponding periods of 2019.

The first weeks of the Promo offer on IC and TLK trains show that the railroad is attracting more and more travellers. We are intensively preparing for the holiday season, during which we expect that many people will consider trains as an attractive alternative to car travel - says Marek Chraniuk, CEO of PKP Intercity.

A modern fleet of trains and the development of the offer attract travellers

The constantly growing number of passengers is also the result of actions taken by PKP Intercity for several years. An increasingly modern fleet of trains used by passengers is the result of a consistently implemented investment program with a perspective until 2030. Within its framework, PKP Intercity has already reinforced its fleet with, among others, over 700 modernized cars and 30 new electric locomotives. The company has contracted rolling stock investments of over PLN 6.1 billion, and the value of the entire program amounts to PLN 27 billion.

Modern vehicles ensure increasing comfort of travelling. Among economic connections, the share of the IC category in relation to TLK is gradually increasing - in the current annual timetable, there are 313 IC category trains, while in the previous one there were 228, and in the 2019/20 season - 203. Over the last two years, the number of comfortable IC trains has thus increased by 54%, while the number of TLK category trains has decreased by 32%.

PKP Intercity is systematically expanding its route network, including new destinations and opening new destinations. This summer, PKP Intercity trains will stop in 414 cities and towns, and by comparison in 2015, residents of 330 centres had access to the carrier's services.

This summer passengers will travel around Poland

As shown by the results of a survey commissioned by PKP Intercity, 37% of Poles have already planned their vacation and summer trips. Almost the same number (36.5%) do not have specific plans yet but want to go somewhere. 8.5% of respondents are planning a vacation trip, but only in autumn. Less than one in five respondents declare that they have no plans.

Of those Poles who plan to travel, 85% intend to visit the most popular Polish tourist destinations - the sea, Masuria, mountains or large cities. The number one holiday destination is the sea, with 35.5% of respondents going to the coast.

Polish mountains will be visited by 26% of respondents, and Masuria - by 15.5%. 8% plan to go to one of the large Polish cities. A foreign trip is planned by 3 out of 10 respondents.

This year's vacation offer of PKP Intercity is a response to the dynamically growing interest in rail travel. This summer, an average of 436 trains will leave for the tracks every day - 11 more than in the last year before the pandemic. Along with the beginning of the school vacations, additional seasonal trains will go out every day, making it easier to get to the seaside from different regions of Poland. PKP Intercity will also launch several new connections on holiday weekends. From 25 June this year, direct connections to Zakopane will return for the summer season.
