A TransPennine Express train derailed and crashed into the concrete near Heaton Depot around 6:30 a.m. March 22. Northern Rail employees moved the train with two cranes three days after the crash.
The derailment led to widespread disruptions in train service to and from Newcastle. As a result, trains on other routes served by London Northern Eastern Railway and Northern Rail were canceled.
An investigation was initiated on the day of the accident. The Railroad Accident Investigation Department was informed immediately. Fortunately, there were no passengers on board when the train derailed, and it was confirmed there were no casualties.
